Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is EEG?

EEG stands for Electroencephalography. EEG is an electrophysiological monitoring method to record electrical activity of the brain. The EEG device detects these electrical impulses non-invasively from the surface of the scalp and they are viewed as waves on a digital screen.

2. Is it really non-invasive?

Yes, the electrical impulses are detected by securing electrodes to the scalp. Traditional EEG devices use ‘wet’ electrodes, which involves using a conductive gel. But newer EEG technology now has ‘dry’ electrodes which do not require any gel.

3. Is it dangerous?

No, the EEG device merely picks up the electrical signals constantly being emitted through the scalp.

4. What signals does the EEG put into the body?

None, the EEG device only ‘reads’ signals from the scalp, it does not send any signals to the scalp.

5. How long does it take to use?

Traditional EEG machines using wet electrodes can take up to 15 minutes to setup before the recording can begin (the majority of this time taken to attach the electrodes to the scalp). However, newer EEG technology utilising dry electrodes generally takes only a few minutes to setup.

6. I have long hair, can I still use it?

Yes, the EEG devices will still work with long hair, it’s just about getting the electrodes into contact with the scalp.

7. Does Psimonix have its own EEG device?

No, Psimonix has produced its own software as service that will work with third party EEG devices. So you are not restricted to a specific EEG device. Contact [email protected] for queries about specific devices.

8. I thought EEG was just for Epilepsy?

Whilst EEG is one of the main tools to diagnose epilepsy, it is also used to help diagnose other conditions such as sleep disorders, stroke and brain damage. It’s also used in Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology as well as in academic and scientific research.

9. How long has EEG been around for?

The first human EEG recording was taken in 1924 by Hans Berger. But the roots of EEG go as far back as the late 1800’s.

10. Why are hormones important?

Hormones are an essential part of our regulatory system.

Dysregulation in hormonal balance indicates health issues or potential health issues.

11. What problems are linked to hormones?

Currently, obtaining hormone levels is invasive, expensive, protracted and reliant upon non–renewable resources.
Regular measurements of hormone levels has not been possible due to the testing procedure and the time required to process results.
